The monkeypox virus first started to spread in 1965. It’s a virus similar to the vaccinia virus that is used in smallpox vaccinations. It causes a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes and fever that typically recedes in a few weeks.

First, the researchers were able to create an accurate model of the monkeypox virus thanks to its similarity with the vaccinia virus. The 3D model of virus proteins allows comparison of specific mutations. Then, the researchers specifically looked at the genes responsible for replicating the virus. They narrowed down to five proteins: DNA polymerase, DNA helicase, bridging protein A22R, DNA glycosylase and G9R. They identified changes to DNA binding in the protein molecules, which are also used by drugs and antibodies to bind.
