This actually confused me. Was he deeply hurt by past memories that gave him suicidal thoughts, or was he afraid of facing the upcoming stuff?

Past failures prevent them from seeing opportunities for future success and therefore life is meaningless
It's the past because past is the cause. It's the future because not seeing a future is also a cause.
I would say both. The past traumatized him with no hope for the future. The two combined crashed the guy.
Not the past, not the future, but the present.
All subjective projections of what the future looks like is based on the past. When we predict, we extrapolate, and we cannot ever be 100% sure. So in the end, the past it is. :|
